back in the U.S.

July 15, 2014

Last week we finished packing and moved halfway across the world again.

The boys like to help pack, too. Little D helped pack his toys and books.  Little M liked to put things into suitcases too.  Most of the actual packing was done when they weren’t around.

On Tuesday, we flew from the Solomons to Fiji.  On Wednesday, we flew to Los Angeles.  On Thursday, we flew to Iowa.  The overnights in Fiji and L.A. hotels helped us start adjusting to the huge time difference.

Customs, immigration, and luggage collection all three times went as smoothly as they could possibly have, considering our amount of luggage and adult-child ratio.  Little D liked to pull one of the wheeled carry-ons in the airports.  After we picked up our luggage each time, he insisted on pushing one of the luggage carts.

Now that he’s two years old, Little M got his own seat on all four flights.  This let us all sleep easier.  He spent a lot of time reading the in-flight magazine and safety card because both of them have lots of airplanes.

This week we’ve met the three cousins on my side of the family who were born since we left the U.S.  We’ve also gotten to know the older two cousins as preschoolers instead of toddlers.  We’ve laughed a lot more than we’ve refereed, which is the right balance of cousin-time.  We’ve also been trying to get over jet lag, eating Iowa summer food, and going to doctor appointments.  Next week we’ll go to a Wycliffe debriefing/re-entry workshop in Orlando.

It’s been a big, busy, successful, exciting, tiring week.
